LATAH COUNTY, Idaho (Court TV) — Accused quadruple murderer Bryan Kohberger is in court this afternoon for a motions hearing ahead of his October trial.
Several experts on DNA and genealogy are expected to testify.
In court documents, Kohberger’s defense team stated they intend to argue two motions:
- Defendant’s 3rd Motion to Compel filed June 22, 2023
- Defendant’s 2nd Motion to Stay Proceedings filed July 25, 2023
Previously, prosecutors said they intend to argue the following:
- State’s June 16 Motion for Protective Order
- State’s July 17 Motion to Reconsider Order Staying Time for Speedy Trial
- State’s July 17 Motion for Scheduling Order
- State’s July 27 Motion to compel “Notice of Defense of Alibi”
Kohberger is facing four first-degree murder charges and a felony burglary charge in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. The University of Idaho students were found stabbed to death in a home near campus on Nov. 13, 2022.
At his arraignment in May, Kohberger exercised his right to stand silent and Judge John Judge entered not guilty pleas to the five charges.
Earlier this month, his attorneys said in court documents that their client was “out, driving” alone the night of the murders. The document was filed after prosecutors asked the court to force Kohberger to reveal if he intends to offer an alibi, reported The AP.
Kohberger’s trial is currently scheduled to begin Oct. 2. In June, prosecutors said they intend to seek the death penalty.
